Ph. D. The Game FAQ
Do you have to have gone to grad school to enjoy Ph. D. The Game?
No. As long as you enjoy tabletop card games that are a lot of fun, you will enjoy this game. Although there are some references/card themes that are grad school based, the game has a fun mechanic and gameplay that is enjoyable for anyone who plays it.
How long does the game take to play?
How many people can play Ph. D. The Game at one time?
The game is meant for 2-4 players and we are currently working on an expansion pack of cards to allow for up to 6 players.
If a card has me draw an additional card each turn, do I draw my standard hand to 4, play my card(s) and then draw my additional card?
No, if a card played in front of you has you draw an extra card each turn, that adds to your draw limit, increasing drawing your hand to 5 instead of the standard 4. Consider your turn in phases where drawing is an entire phase and it is all done at once.
If I am drawing multiple cards (for example, let's say I am drawing 3 cards) and the first card that comes up is a Lose A Turn Card, do I keep drawing my hand up to 4 or do I stop immediately?
The Lose A Turn Cards end your turn and are effective immediately. You do not get to draw the rest of your hand until your next turn. It seems unfair, but so does grad school. Sorry!
What happens when I play "Interview Weekend" and a Lose A Turn Card is one of the three cards that I draw?
Then your turn does not end in this instance. You can actually use it as the card you return to the top of the Draw Card Deck so that it affects the player whose turn is after yours!
Can I "Take a Chance" with no played Figure Cards?
Yes. The original intention of the card was to be able to play it no matter how many Figure Cards you have played (even with zero). Losing a turn if you get rejected can hurt you badly in this game and is an appropriate repercussion to submitting without any Figure Cards. If you decide you do not like this rule then you may make a house rule stating that you must have at least one Figure Card played in order to "Take a Chance".
Is it mandatory to play a card each turn or can I pass or discard a card instead?
You MUST play a card every turn. The only time you will not play a card is when you draw a Lose A Turn Card at the start of your turn.
Some cards have every player drawing a card and playing it, how does that work?
One such card, such as the PI on Vacation Card, has every player draw a card to be played immediately. This starts with the person whose turn it is currently and who played the original card. That person draws and plays the top card from the Draw Card Deck. As soon as that action is completed, the person to their left draws and plays the top card from the Draw Card Deck as well. This continues until every player has drawn and played the top card from the Draw Card Deck. Gameplay then resumes as normal with the person to the left of the player who played the PI on Vacation Card.
